The importance of the history of economic thought, i.e. of the study of the historical evolution of different paradigms in economics: that was the topic of my introductory lecture today. Odd though it may sound, Leeds University’s students are among the few students in Europe who can still attend a module specifically devoted to the history of economic ideas and debates. For orthodox economists are usually said to support competition. Particularly when there are no competitors left.
